The Habits That Keep Us Strong for Life

My mom is in her mid-70s, and she isn’t slowing down. If anything, she seems to be speeding up.

Whenever our whole family gets together, I’m reminded of it. She keeps up with everyone, including my nieces and nephews—and honestly, sometimes they’re the ones who get tired first.

She’s one of my heroes.

My parents came to America more than four decades ago, and my mom put her career on hold to raise three kids—two angels and one crazy kid (me).

But through every stage of life, she has always prioritized two things: movement and connection.

Years ago, I basically forced her into strength training because I thought I was doing her a favor. Eventually, something clicked. The habit stuck.

Now there are weeks when she gets in more workouts than I do.

And strength training is only part of it.

Research into the world’s longest-living populations has repeatedly pointed to a handful of habits that tend to show up together: regular movement, nourishing food, a positive sense of purpose, and strong social connections.

My mom checks every box.

Watching her has reinforced something I believe deeply about health and fitness: there isn’t one magic workout, diet, or habit that keeps us healthy as we age.

It’s the combination.

That’s something we try to build with our members at TS Fitness. Of course we care about getting stronger and exercising consistently. But it’s not just the workouts.

It’s movement.
It’s nutrition.
It’s mindset.
It’s connection.

And most importantly, it’s learning how to make those things part of your normal life instead of something you have to constantly force yourself to do.

That’s also why challenges can be so powerful. A good challenge isn’t about white-knuckling your way through a few intense weeks and then going back to your old routine. It creates structure, accountability, and community while helping you practice several healthy behaviors at the same time.

Do them long enough and something starts to change.

The workout becomes part of your week.
The healthier meal becomes your normal choice.
The people around you become part of your support system.

What started as something you had to consciously work at becomes a habit.

And over enough time, those habits become a lifestyle.

Watching my mom in her mid-70s reminds me what all of this work is really for.

It’s not just about being stronger today.

It’s about building the kind of life that allows you to keep moving, connecting, participating, and enjoying the people you love for decades to come.
