Strong Kids, Strong Families: Why Healthy Habits Start in the Kitchen
Strong Kids, Strong Families: Why Healthy Habits Start in the Kitchen
Ask most people where fitness begins, and they'll point to the gym. But some of the most important health lessons happen around a cutting board, with a kid asking, "What's this vegetable called?"
Over the last two years, I've had the privilege of working with SNACC a number of times, bringing food and fitness education to underserved communities across New York City. I mostly coach adults, but teaching kids about nutrition and movement is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.
What SNACC Does
SNACC is an in-school and after-school food education program for high-need youth.
- In the classroom, students get hands-on cooking experience and nutrition knowledge.
- After school, families receive grocery drop-offs, and students take weekly cooking classes with professional chefs.
Kids gain confidence, self-sufficiency, and real skills they can bring home to their families.
The Lesson for All of Us
These students remind me of something I tell my clients all the time: healthy habits stick when you're involved in creating them.
Try this at home:
- Cook one more meal a week. Just one more than you do now.
- Involve the household. Kids are more likely to try foods they helped make.
- Start simple. A sheet-pan dinner counts. Skill grows with repetition, just like strength.
At TS Fitness, we talk a lot about building strength for life outside the gym. The same goes for nutrition. The habits we build at home, especially with our kids, can have an impact long after the workout is over.
